Portraits

Our thoughts and feelings interplay to create the face we present to the world. Each face is enriched by the complexity of what goes on within, joy and pain, insight and confusion, curiosity and complacency. I like the challenge of creating portraits that give clues to these complex inner workings. Anonymity of the subject gives freedom to the expression.

Mother Nature

Nature inspires much of my art. Since childhood, geodes have held a fascination for me. Smooth, gray, commonplace exteriors hide treasures on the inside: bright, glittery, colorful and convoluted worlds on the inside. As in nature, the closer you look, the more you see in each work.

Using rocks and shells and rusty metal provides the textures of nature. These elements give an appealing sense of the familiar even in unexpected compositions. With concrete as a material in much of my work, I get to play in the mud—always a welcome opportunity!

“I saw all my colors in my mind’s eye.” — Wassily Kandinsky
